A small piece of history
History has been made in a small but significant way in recent weeks. For the first time ever two GM's competed against each other in a match in the
Liverpool (MCA) league ...more.
Glorney and Faber Cups
Liverpool John Moores University
IM Marsh campus
is hosting this prestigious and famous tournament from July 22nd–25th 2008.
In 1948 a Dublin businessman created the Glorney Cup (for boys) and it was joined twenty years later by the Faber Cup (for girls).
The Cups were last played for in Liverpool in 2005. More information about last year's competition is on the
ECF site.
Data about both cups is well documented on the Olimpbase website and the Irish Union
website has photos and match results from last year's event (won by England) in Dublin.
Chess Prodigy tipped to be the best ever.
The UK now has a young chess player who's tipped to be the best the world has ever seen. He's Felix Ynojosa, only 12 years old; his coach is GM Nick Pert.
See a short video by BBC South Today featuring the young talent.
Merseyside Team Lightning 2008
This is to take place at the Adelphi Hotel on Monday 9th June starting at 7.30pm. Teams of four required with a reserve ... more.
Chess in
Liverpool 2008
There are
several other important chess events in Liverpool in 2008, most notably the British
Championships at St. George’s Hall 27th July
– 9th August and the 4th EU Individual
Championships at the World Museum 9th – 18th
September. Details of those already taking part in the EU event are available on the official site. Nigel Short has confirmed his
entry and announcements about other very strong GM's will be made in the near future.
The winner of the 2007 Open Individual Championship GM Daniel Fridman from Germany is also competing together with GM's Stewart Haslinger, Nigel Davies, Nigel Short, Mickey Adams, the
newly crowned European Champion Sergei Tiviakov and more.
